Kent State Univeristy

Watch the following video about the shooting of students at Kent State University protesting the Vietnam War in 1970. What do you think about the pictures used in the video? Do they help with describing what happened at Kent State University. Also, what effect do you think the song had on America when it was released after the incident. The song was written by Crosy, Stills, Nash, and Young. You should write 1-2 paragraphs on this topic. This will be due Wednesday and will count as a homework assignment.

  1. I think the pictures in the video helped showed what happen at Kent State University. The help because there are some pictures that were taken at the time and showed some of the injured or killed people. I think the song had a big affect on America because when people heard this song, they would think about this incident, and they would like to try and prevent it from ever happening again.

  2. Honestly, I feel that the pictures in this video were extremly appropriate and relavent to what went on at Kent State. They showed accurate pictures, real pictures, that mimiced the lyrics.
On the other hand, I found that the music, as in the instrument section (without the singers and lyrics), had somehow lacked the message. The instrumental part made the situation seem dangerous, but lacked the depressing side of the situation. It was like the song that would go to a villan in a Cowboy movie.
However, I did enjoy this song, and I had heard it before, but never knew what they were saying or explaining and that it was, in fact, a real life event.

  3. The pictures seen in the video give a good visual aspect. You can tell what times were like in that point in time and how people were feeling just by looking at the pictures. These pictures I feel explain a little of what happened but it might be hard to understand unless you learned about it. They go along with the music but it doesn't really explain what went on. Not only did the pictures help explain what was going on but also the music that was playing helped to understand also.
The song that was played during the video by Crosy, Stills, Nash, and Young was about what was going on in America in 1970. The effect on America after the song was released I think was just remembering what happened that day.

  4. The pictures in this video, in my opinion, were captured perfectly in this situation. They assist me with learning more about what went on at Kent State University. I believe they are very helpful and are suitable for this video.
The lyrics in this video are also great. They really explain the reality behind the disaster that occured and the devistation. On the otherhand, I agree with Jess in which the backround music should show the depressing factors behind the shootings. That is all.

  5. The pictures in this video were appropriate in the visual they gave. They were mostly pictures from the shooting and around when it happened, in one it is a photo of a march with people holding up signs reading "peace". This song affected American's lives by getting the message out to the citizens and to remember what had happened on that day. The pictures went along with the lyrics, however the instrumental part, like Jess said, is not suitable because it is too upbeat for what has happened.

  7. Dear Frank,
The pictures in this video really symbolize the protests in the 60's and 70's. It showed the determination of the people and how they would stick to what they believed in. The music behind it also really showed how some Americans felt about the war and the massacre the happened at kent State University. Like Lauren said, "The pictures in this video were appropriate in the visual they gave".

  8. These pictures definetly help describe what went down at Kent State. I don't know if they were all taken at the shotting, but overall you can definetly tell how the war in Vietnam was affecting people at home. If the American public really thought about the message of the song, I think the whole idea of being over in Vietnam would really come into perspective. So many of them wanted to get out and hearing songs with the same opinions by people they look up to I'm sure made them push their cause even more. I'm sure when Americans heard this song they thought about the four people that died that day, but even more of how people in our own country were killed all becasue they wanted our own soldiers to come home and not have to die. hmm, ironic.

  9. I think the pictures, for the most part, are appropriate. They capture what was happening at the time and the contrasts between the government and the people in the United States. I think the song's overall effect on America was to feed the anger and dissatisfaction towards the government.

  10. I think the pictures in the video helped show what happened at Kent State University. They showed some of the students after getting shot. I think the song helped remind America what happened that day. I agree with Jess about the music being to upbeat for such a sad incident.

  11. I think that the pictures in the video help show what happened at Kent State University. Most of the pictures show unarmed college students and a group of armed military personel ready to fight if need be. This song seems like it would have had a large effect on those who listened to it after the incident occured. This song may have been an eye opener for many people, showing them what was really going on. This song would have made people want to make sure nothing like this incident ever happen again.

  12. I think the pictures in the video were very appropriate and helpful. They brought the shooting at Kent Stae University to reality because you're seeing actual images of bodies and horrified people.
Also, the song was well-suited for the aftermath of an unfortunate incident and for this montage of pictures. I think the song reminded Americans during that time of this terrible day and gave them motivation to fight for their cause.

  13. i believe the pictures better help tell the story of what happened at Ohio. they help the shooting seem more real by shooting visuals instead of just saying what happened. With body's on the ground and people running. the song makes in all sink in way more then just saying it. its the song that get stuck in your head and doesn't let you forget what happened.

  14. The photographs used in this video really shows you the tragedy of this shooting. The picture where the student is crying over the body at 0:52 shows how serious the shooting really was. The pictures are nicely synced with the lyrics as well. The song most likely greatly helped with the anti-war effort for it was a wake-up call to America and publicized the Kent State University incident further.

  15. I think that the pictures help show that this realy happened in our nations history and wasent that long ago. it helps us all relate it to our own lives showing how tragic it would be if that happened. The song showed that when this incident happened it was a major event in our nation. the song made it so the event that happened at kent state university was rembered so that this incident would make an impac on american history.

  16. This song was really powerful and moving. It was played and people listened. They listened to it because it really hit home. And It showed what really happened at Kent State as did the pictures. I feel the photos taken of it were really good and informative. They showed the soldiers ready to fight off protesters. It also showed the sadness of people being wounded and killed. Overall, I feel the pictures were very appropriate for the song.

  17. I think the video made more of an impact on people because it was paired with a song written by a famous artist. Also, it being visual makes it that much more realistic.

  18. I believe that having a popular and influencial band sing a song about the crisis going on makes it easier for people to learn about. Most people listen to music much more then watching presidental speeches so writing news in song form is more effective. The pic@tures also make it mosre realistic and sad
