The first video is from 60 Minutes on CBS from 1977, right before the Frost/Nixon interviews originally aired.
The second video is probably the most famous clip from the interview.
The third video is from the actual Frost/Nixon interviews where they are discussing Watergate.
Please comment about all three videos together by answering the following questions. This will count as TWO QUIZ GRADES and will be due on Friday. Please email your answers.
1. How do the video's compare to the movie Frost/Nixon?
2. If you lived in 1977, would you have watched the interviews, why or why not?
3. Do you feel that Pres. Nixon was sincere in the video's?
4. How did David Frost do, even though he was not considered to be a "real journalist"?
5. Since, the three t.v. networks(NBC, ABC, CBS) passed on the interviews, do you think they regret that decision, why or why not?
I thought the first video was good because someone interviewed Frost about his interview with Nixon. It was also intersting to find out that Nixon got 10% of the interview money. The second video was good because the movie showed the same thing, that Nixon said that he was above the law.
ReplyDeleteThe third video was good but it was very long and Nixon kept going on about his last few days. It was intersting the hear him say in the third video was that he said no other President will resign, that he will be the only one. And at some points in the video, I thought he was going to start to cry when he was talking about his last few days as President.

I believe that Frost took this interview very seriously for he knew that this was the break he needed. He had a crew to help him prepare for anything Nixon might say. Frost knows that once they get on to the topic of Watergate he must be ready for anything. America was shocked as well as myself when Frost asked Nixon if in some cases he thought that the president could do something illegal for the interest of the nation. Nixon then replies, "Well when the President does it that means it is not illegal." That line is the most famous and captured the audiences attention.
ReplyDeleteNixon claims that he did not commit an impeachable offense but I disagree for I feel that a crook should not be the man to represent the Unites States of America. I do like how Nixon admitted that in the end he was wrong and felt he should have handled Watergate differently. I did feel bad when Nixon said it was the first time he cried since Eisenhower died. After seeing this I actually want to see more of the Frost Nixon interview.
Jackie Goddard
In the first video, it seemed like Frost Nixon was unprepared for his questions about the examination he will give to richard Nixon, yet
ReplyDeleteit was obvious which side I was on and I couldn't help but feel angry for Nixon when he did say the case was not illegal because of where he stands on the social scale...in thoes thirty seconds I felt he was childish..."I can rob a woman, because I'm high on the social scale, and it wouldn't really be called robbing"- was basically what it felt like he was saying.
In the third video, I felt that the movie "Frost Nixon" was not told correctly. I thought the scene was to be rigorous for Nixon, and was amazed that in real lie he had been calm. As a former president, I had expected him to have been less selfish and sentimental about things that were not really related to the Watergate, such as crying over Eisenhower. It clearly, I believe, showed that he was weak.
JMAKoehne
Nick, what do you think of Nixon getting 10% of the interview money?
ReplyDeleteJackie, if a President does something illegal, is it illegal? What do you think?
Jess, do you think the movie portrayed the interviews correctly or not? Just curious.
I did not think the movie portrayed it well because the movie made the situation more rigorous, but the information spoken was accurate. Nixon in the movie yelled much of the time, but in reality little did he rasied his voice.
ReplyDeleteJMAKoehne
I thought that the first video was good because the interviewer waas being interviewed. You got to see what Frost had to say about the interviews. In the second video I was shocked that he actually said that anything he does isn't illegal. The funny thing that I notice was that in the movie they said the exact thing Nixon said in the interview. I thought it was very unpresidential for Nixon when he basically said that the president can get away with anything.
ReplyDeleteThe third video I feel was a lot about him being the president during the last few days. I didn't really feel any sympathy for him when he was talking about Eisenhower's death and him crying. I think he just didn't really want to talk about Watergate at all. After seeing the videos it was a lot like the movie we watched. They used the same words as Nixon and Frost did but the mannerism of the actors and how they acted were different.
I don't know who wrote this last post???? I can't give you credit because there is no name attached!
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Barbuto,
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the first video was really interesting because Frost made it seem like he was hiding something about the money and couldn't tell reporters because they would wonder his or Nixon's intentions. I think Nixon getting 10% is a small prize compared to his representation he gained after selling himself out during the interviews.
The second video is funny because he knows what he is saying is ridiculous but he says it so nonchalant and calmly that people might not understand what he is admitting. He is saying that the President can do illegal things just because he has authority which is stupid.
The last video was long, and just as in the movie, it shows how Nixon used tactics of just rambeling on and on in hopes that the viewers would get bored and stop paying attention, as I did.... But when he is in that situation when your reputation is at stake, I guess it was a good idea.
RACHELDEYOUNGISTHEBEST
Rachel, do you think that Pres. Nixon should have gotten 10% of what the interviews made? Is that fair?
ReplyDeleteokay, well now that I just accidently erased my entire three paragraphs, let's write this again.
ReplyDeleteI was not really a huge fan of the first video, it didn't do a whole lot for me, but what Frost said was true. If Nixon didn't come out with some kind of recognition that what he did was wrong on tv, he would have dug himself an even bigger hole. People in this country wanted Nixon to feel bad about himself, and they had the right to. I think if he came out with all this in a book, it almost shows insincerity. He knew EVERYONE would be watching the tapings, and he knew not everyone would read his book.
The second video just made Nixon look like an idiot. Since when is anyone in this country exempt from the law? Nixon either needed some confidence or some common sense. He beat his opponent by a lot, so he didn't even need to be spying on the Democrats, and he clearly didn't realize what the repercussions would be once he did get caught.
I'm a little sleepy after this last one. I don't really care when the last time Nixon cried was. I think if I was a citizen of the U.S. when all this went down I still wouldn't be satisfied with him. He still never truly said that what he did was wrong. He said he let everyone down, but he was still trying to convince everyone that he never committed a crime. Sorry, breaking into the Democratic National Convention and wiretapping the room is breaking the law, I don't care who you are.
haley ostrem :)
Haley, I'm sorry that your first attempt was erased. If he would have admitted any wrong doing in the Watergate incident, would that change your opinion of him or his years has President?
ReplyDeleteI thought the first video was interesting because it was Frost's turn to be interviewed. I felt that Frost answered the questions well, and he knew what he was talking about. However, it was made pretty clear that Frost was hiding something about the money arrangements between Nixon and himself for the interviews. I think it's fair that Nixon only received 10% of the profit from the interiews because after all the crimes he had committed while leading our country, he doesn't deserve a reward. Also, I was shocked that in the second video Nixon actually said that because he was the pesident, he could do illegal things and get away with them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rachel in saying that the last video was long, and it corresponded with the video we watched because Nixon was rambling to get around the questions. He was just looking for sympathy that I wasn't going to give to him after hearing part of the actual interview and knowing all of his wrongdoings. These clips made me interested in what was actually said in the full set of interviews.

I think that frost did a very good job intervewing nixon. He asked the right questions that needed to be asked. I think that these interveiws, mostly the one about watergate, realy let the nation into what was going on in nixons head during his presidency. you can clearly see that he thought that nothing could b illigal for the president. he thought that he should have a get out of jail free card for anything that he wanted to do. nixon final seemed to realize that as shown in the second video.
ReplyDeletethe movie portrayed the frost/nixon interveiws very well. you can see in the third video that nixon did try to keep ramabling on about unimporant thinkgsa to try to waste frost's time and not let him get into more conterversial questions. i think that nixon was suprised at how frost got right to the point about conterversal questions and did not beat around the bush about them

In the first video, I thought it was interesting seeing David Frost being interviewed, since he was the one interviewing Nixon. It was intriguing to watch. In the second video, even though it was only 30 seconds long, you could tell how the movie resembled the interviews very accurately. Nixon acted like if he was president, he could do illegal things, while thinking they were legal. He acted like just because he was president he could get away with anything and do whatever he wanted.
ReplyDeleteFinally, the last video was a little long because he got carried away with the fact that he cried in front of all his friends in Congress. He says he didn't try to cover it up, but we all know that he really did. The whole time I was thinking that he was such a liar. He was just trying to get whoever was watching's sympathy, and I thought that was annoying and no one really cared. It's amazing that he continued to pretend that he wasn't covering anything up, even after he had resigned.
- LIZZZZZZZ CACCAVELLLIIIIII!!
Liz, do you think the movie was accurate in their take on Frost and Nixon?
ReplyDeleteRyan, should the President be given the "get out of jail" free card?
Cassie, should he be allowed to receive any money from a "possible" crime?
I have mixed feelings about him getting money. I mean Frost got money so Nixon kinda should as well. But on the other hand, how hard is it to sit in a chair and answer questions a few times? Easy money.
ReplyDelete-Rachellll
I don't think Nixon should have been allowed to receive any money because he didn't deserve it. Anyone can sit in a char for a few hours and answer questions. I think that Nixon should have addressed the public and admitted his crimes on his own; he shouldn't have been paid for something that he should have done on his own anyways.
ReplyDeleteCASSIE G.
The first video that interviewed Frost about his televised conversations with Nixon showed me how serious Frost took these interviews and how prepared he wanted to be. Frost was confident and believed Nixon would tell him the truth rather than just write it in his book because Nixon would realize more people would watch the interviews than buy his book and read it. The second video shows how foolish Nixon is for believeing, "when a President does something it means it is not illegal." As i see it, Nixon should be trying to get the citizens of the United States to forgive him rather than further anger them.
ReplyDeleteThe third video just showed how weak Nixon really was. Seriously, no one really cares when the last time you "cried" was and who it was in front of. He constantly talks around the point gets close to a legitament point and rambles on about another point to waste Frost's time and try to win forgiveness from the viewers. Towards the end of the third video he lists who he let down and the "opportunities which he could have percieved in the next few years" shows the only part I would have any condolences for him. "Techniqually I did not commit a crime," immediately changed any sorrow I felt for him, and if I were a U.S. citizen during this time I would not have forgiven him because even after he was out of office, he continued to believe he had not committed a crime.

If Nixon had actually admitted his wrong doing I probably would have more respect for him and see the situation a little differently. It's just how he said everything in the interviews made it seem like he was saying sorry because he knew we had to, not becuase he was truly sorry for what he did.

I found the first video to be very interesting in the sense that David Frost gave his expectations of how the former president, Nixon, would act during their interview. He said that he did not expect Nixon to lie or use a "stone wall aproach". He was partially correct due to the fact that Nixon did not really lie, but he told the truth from his own eyes, and not the way that many people would have seen it. The only part of the first video I did not like was that the subject of Nixon recieving a portion of the profit was viewed as needed information. It does not really matter if he profited from the interview or not.
ReplyDeleteThe second and third videos would have absolutely caused the original viewers to be shocked. If Nixon truly believed that the president is above the law, then he could have done just about anything he wanted. No single person in their right mind would think of saying that and not think of the consequenses. Also, the last video shows that he really and truly believes what he says is true that he didn't really do anything wrong.

Dear Mr. Barbuto,
ReplyDeleteIn the first video, I believed Frost was definitely not prepared for the questions that were being asked. He stuttered and took long pauses. These actions are not television appropriate. On the other hand, it does seem like he did a lot of preparation for these interviews with Nixon because they were so important. Also, this video says how Nixon receives 10% of the prophets. This is a reasonably fair deal I would have to say. He does deserve some cut and 10% is probably the best choice of an amount. Finally, the most famous clip of the interview is when Richard Nixon announced that “if the president does it, then it is not illegal.” This is not true. Every citizen of the United States should follow the same rules. No person should surpass this even if it is the president of the United States.
In the third video Nixon claimed “I impeached myself.” I found that to sound rather strange. I feel like you cannot do that, but apparently Nixon thinks he can. Also, he is very stuck on the fact that he did not cover it up or at least he did not intend to. He almost makes himself sounds suspicious. Finally, Nixon actually cried. The world is ending. No, he just makes it seem like such a big deal. He seriously talks for around five minutes about him crying. Everyone cries. It is not that big of a deal. These videos were similar to the movie we watched in class. Not bad, not bad at all.
-NICOLEEE
I think the first video was good because it showed how frost felt and it gave some of the details about the financial aspects of the interview. It also gave us a preview of what the interview with Nixon might be like. I don't agree with Nixon in the second video. I don't agree because you shouldn't be allowed to get away with a crime that normal civilians would be jailed for simply because you are the president.
ReplyDeleteIn the third video, it showed how much of a slug Nixon really was. Here he has the chance to admit to the american people he did wrong and he did participate in an illegal coverup and he didn't. He continued to maintain his "innocence". He still said he did not commit a crime. I disagree with him and if I was a citizen at this time I would be outraged.
-Emily Powers
I think the first video was interesting because they asked Frost how Nixon would react to the questions given and he told them that he would be a stonewall rather than a cascade. Plus the amount of money that Frost gets over Nixon i think is a little unfair because Frost got to actually have an interview with a high official which is just almost impossible at that time because Nixon knows all the people want to know about is watergate. In the second video Nixon finally confesses to everyone in the nation that it is ok for the president to do anything and get away with it. From that statement he lost all support of the people in the nation that saw that drastic 34 seconds and now has a huge feeling of guilt.
ReplyDeleteThe third video was where Nixon tries to tell the country the truth but lies in the whole process. Everyone by then knew he covered it up and they wanted him to admit it. But then he goes on and on about him crying which he normally doesnt do and how he let everyone down. He knew what he did was wrong and he knew he would have to carry that with him for the rest of his life. He knew that he would then not be apart of any political business because of the handling of the matter and of the lying to the nation.

Nixon getting 10% of the interview money seem ridiculous. $600,00 is a lot of money. He didn't really need the extra 10%. He didn't really desevre that money in the first place. It was like rewarding him for admitting wrong doing. You don't pay a kid for admitting that he trashed the house while his parents were away.
ReplyDeleteThe third video seemed like Nixon was trying to justify his actions a little and apologize. It was too late for him to start apologizing. He obviously regrets his actions and feels regret, but it came out too long after Watergate for it to allow him to regain the people's trust. He sounds authentic. He looks authentic. But, he should have cleared everything up earlier rather than later.
-Lisa Donoughe
I liked the first video. I thought it was interesting that Nixon got 10% of the overall profits for the interview. Even though the second video was short, it showed that Nixon believed that the president could do anything. I: don't think that was right because the President should set an example for the country.
ReplyDeleteThe last video made me feel bad for Nixon. He was clearly upset with what happened. He seemed like he was going to cry. he admitted to doing something wrong, but he said he didn't think it was wrong at the time.

i know that nixon broke the law he covered up the who scandal and lied to the american public about it. he says thats its not obstruction of power but it is it is illegela to hide things from the public especially a crime that has been committed. nixon should have a trial for obstruction of power
