Watch the following speech President Jimmy Carter gave to the nation after the failed rescue attempt to save American hostages in Iran. What were your thoughts on the speech? Should he have tried another rescue mission? Please post by Tuesday, Jan. 11 and this will count as a homework assignment. Also, information from the speech should be used on the essay about the Iran Hostage Crisis when you take the test.
I think that President Carter explained the situation very clearly in this speach. He gave the facts very clearly so that people would not get confused or have many questions even though he had some other information that would later be released when it would be appropiate. He also makes it clear that this was his decision and he is fully responsible for the outcome. I trust in his decision to not try another rescue mission. If we had sent in troops even specialy trained one to rescue hostages, there would be shooting involved from either side. That is unless the hostages were peacefully returned, but I doubt that. Unfortuneatly, waiting for a peaceful settlement was probrably the best option, but people can only be patient for so long.

In this speech I liked how he kept saying it was his fault. They should have tried another rescue mission. He explained clearly what happened to the American public. I like how he said the details would be released the the public which he did to try to help the U.S. government get the convidense of the public back. Chris H
ReplyDeleteHis speech was very well said and I also liked that he specifically told the public that the rescue mission was his personal idea. I think he should have tried another rescue mission. The American public might have thought that he tried once just to get the public happy and on his side, but if he kept trying it would make him look like he cared more about getting all the hostages' back safely.

I thought the speech was a good one. It explained what happen to the rescue mission, and in this speech was the first time they announced it on television. I think he should have tried another rescue mission because we needed to get the hostages out, but we didn't try another rescue mission because we failed the first time and and we were embarrassed that we failed, so we didn't try again. If we did try another time, and we failed again, the world would think we are a weak country, and the President didn't want that.

His speech sounds weak. There is no avoiding it. Admitting that it was his fault was a strategic move to avoid riots, but it was not enough. Releasing the information is a good idea. HE should not have planned anouther rescue attempt after the spectacular failure of the first because he sounds incompetent. There is no strong language to support his views. Monotone does not make a good speech. Another rescue attempt would have been doomed to failure.

He sounded pretty remorseful about the entire ordeal. He was also very boring sounding, I was disgusted. The english muffin im eating right now is more lively then he is. In his words he seemed generally repentant, but his tone is very bland in monotonous, JUST LIKE MY HISTORY TEACHER!kthnxbye
ReplyDeleteI thought President Carter explained the situation in his speech very well. He stated the facts and even said that he would release more information later to reassure the public that he wasn't hiding anything. Also, I think he had the right idea by constantly apologizing and admitting that this was his fault. I agree with Lisa, though, that Carter speaks and monotone which doean't hold my attention for long. I believe that he should have tried another rescue mission because it would've showed the public that he care and that he was serious about bringing the hostages back safely.

My feelings have been hurt by that comment but I will try to recover from it Callen!
ReplyDeleteIn the speach it was good how he kept saying that it was his fault. i think that another rescue attempt should have taken place. i dont think that his constant appoligizinging and saying that it was his fault helped the situation but brought to a reality how bad he felt about it

I believe that the speech given by President Carter was very informative. He explained and took blame for the missions failure. I believe that we should have tried again because the hostages lives were a great priority so the united states could show iran leaders they would not back down.

I thought President Carter's speech was stated very clearly. He admitted that the hostage situation was all his fault and took all of the blame. I think that even though his attempt to save the hostages was a failure he should have tried again but have it planned out better. Also I think if he tried again it would look like he actually cared about the hostages and their safety. Sadly we just waited and hoped that they would be returned back home.

I like how he started with his explanation of how the military mission failed. It really emphasized how the world saw the U.S. Which was weak. That is why the Iranians took over the U.S. embassy, because they saw that we couldn't do anything about it.

I honestly feel that if I was in the President's situation, I would be like him. After getting out of the dissapproved Vietnam War, I would not want to get into conflict, but instead send for a rescue mission. Carter was quite reasonable with his speach. At that point, there was not much to do but that. As Lisa D. mentioned, he did apologize constantly, which made him gain respect for his responsibility, at least from me.

I think that his speech was well said and he knew that everyone would be dissappointted with him. He sounded sad and upset but maintained his stature and continued on with his speech. I dont think he would try again because he knew that it probably wouldnt help his re-election campaign and not gain the trust of the people.

I believe that Carter did a good job delivering the speech. He was clear, and to the point. I am disappointed that he did not make another rescue attempt though for the United States can not show that sort of weakness. Events like these give countries ideas to attack the U.S. like 9/11 years later.
ReplyDeleteI believe his speech was not very appealing. His tone was dull and it was hard to understand what he was saying. Carter's speech was very informative with releasing all the details about the failure mission that had occurred. I think if they tried for another attempt on saving the hostages it would have failed. Since the first one didn't turn out well, Carter thought about not trying again because he knew he couldn't get them out. Also, It seemed like Carter didn't really care when he presented his speech to the public.

President Carter's speech was alright, minus his monotone and his repetitive apoligizing. Continuously taking the blame does not make a speech well done, nor does monotone. Our first attempt to save the hostages was a failure.. but another plan and attempt could have shown Carter's dedication or that the U.S. was a weak country.

I feel as though the President just rambled on and on about the same points the entire time and could have summed it up in like, 2 minutes. I do believe they should have tried another rescue mission because the first was a fail because of mechanical difficulties, not poor execution.

I enjoyed this speech because he talked well, but it wasnot the best speech. The ordeal of the whole capturing of the embassy and Americans is disgraceful. I would have made another rescue mission so America would not think less of our country. It would also not show America's weakness.
