Pres. Nixon's Resignation Speach

The following clip is of Pres. Richard Nixon resigning as President in 1974. You will watch the clip, it is only 4 minutes long, and write your opinion of his speech in three to five sentences. What did you think of the speech? Should he have resigned? This should be done by Thursday Jan. 6 and is a homework assignment.

  1. I believe that Nixon did the right thing by resigning. If he kept his office the American public would continue in this huge distrust in the government. You could tell that Nixon was embarrassed and ashamed to be the first president to resign, but in the end I believe he did it for the better. Hopefully Ford will take over and regain Americans respect and trust in their government.

  2. I thought the speech he gave was good, but I thought he could be lying about Watergate in that speech. I say that because he should have told the truth about the Watergate scandal. I think he should have resigned because he didn't, Congress would impeach him, and he would be President anymore. I also think he should have resigned because the public didn't trust him anymore, either.

  3. I, like others, felt Nixon resigning was the right thing. It must have been a bizzare moment for him, due to the fact that he almost openly admitted to himself trying to spy on the democrats during the Watergate. He deffinatly pointed out what the nation was thinking at the moment, as well as his own family. It was a better choice to resign, for Nixon already had his fill of embarrassment.

  4. I thought his speak was well covered and realized the wrong he has done.I believe that Nixon did the right thing by resigning. Nixon wasn't proud of what he has done but atleast he resigned. If he didn't then the people would not trust the government anymore and he would have been impeached. Nxion was very ashamed of the actions he took and the only way to help his reputation was to resign and infact he has done so.

  5. After watching his speech, my thoughts on him resigning hasn't changed. The speech was well said and he sounded sincere but after you disobay the law and cover up a break in to the whole nation, people won't believe you are sincere anymore. They lost trust in him and I feel the same way. What he did was so wrong and he showed that not even the President obeys all the laws he and his team work to create. I agree with him resigning 100%.

  6. After listening to his speech, I think he was truly sorry about what he had done. I believe he made the right decision to resign though, as people would have just kept mistrusting the government if he had stayed in office while the information about Watergate was being released.

  7. I think that Nixons speech to the nation was hard for him but he told it very informatively. He understood what he did wrong and suffered the consequences by resigning from office. He knew that the nation deserves better and stepped down. I think that it was right for him to resign due to the watergate scandal because he knew he was going to be impeached and either way the nation would see him as a liar.

  8. I definitely think Nixon made the right decision to resign. When it came down to it, he was faced with the reality of resigning or waiting to be impeached and although it's a lose lose situation, I feel like resigning almost would have made the public respect him more. He was clearly embarassed about how everything ended up, and with good reason. You could tell just by his body language that he was sincere and apologetic, but unfortunately, that didn't change any of his actions.

  10. I believe Nixon did the right thing by resigning. He obviously saw that impeachment was close at hand but felt that resigning would be less of a hassle. That or he could not think of anything else to do in the time he would have had left as President before his impeachment. I find that he keeps mentioning congress, as if he were saying he would keep going if it weren't for them.

  11. Once again, Richard Nixon's speech was very well written. His words were quite powerful, and you can here the sincerity in his tone. Although he was sorry about what had happened with the Watergate Scandel, it was a vital thing that he resigned. He was going to get impeached anyways and it was just his time to turn over his power to hopefully a better leader.

  12. As has been said above i believe it was right for Nixon to resign. I beieve this because the nation wasn't happy and he did the right thing giving the power to Ford. I liked the speech and thought it was well written. Chris H

  13. The speech Pres. Nixon gave was professionally executed. He definitely made the right choice by resigning for if he had stayed in office, America would have mistrusted the government more and more until it possibly could've gotten out of hand.
