Kent State Univeristy

Watch the following video about the shooting of students at Kent State University protesting the Vietnam War in 1970. What do you think about the pictures used in the video? Do they help with describing what happened at Kent State University. Also, what effect do you think the song had on America when it was released after the incident. The song was written by Crosy, Stills, Nash, and Young. Honors students should write 2-3 paragraphs about the video. College level students should write 1-2 paragraphs. This is due tomorrow (Friday) and will count as a homework assignment

  1. I believe the pictures give more description to what had happened and how many people were involved and how there people were effected. It gives people of America an idea of how people were treated. I believe that this song effected Americans greatly. For people to see what the people of there own country was doing to insent people for speaking out.

  2. Dicky-dem here. I strongly think that this video explains exactly how the tv war was like. When you see the faces of those four indivuals who were killed you only see young people engaging in there early starts of the rest of their life. Then they were robed of that by to me; an unnessacary war. Nothing came out of it except death and destruction. There fore, this band played an exceptional song which expressed it all.

  3. The shootings at Kent State University were a tragedy. These people were just sticking up for what they believed in. They were against the Vietnam War. No one should have been killed or injured. America emphasizes freedom of speech. The people were freely stating their opinion about what was going on, and no one should have been hurt. If the National Guard did not fire those rounds everyone would have been alright, but the National Guard panicked. Because of that people lost their lives.
As for the song, it represents what happened perfectly. The pictures show the pain and fear that America had at the time. The pictures along with the song are more effective than just the song alone because you can see actual pictures of this tragedy. America was affected by this song after the incident. If I was a family member of one of the victims, I would not want to listen to it. It would probably cause more pain. I don’t think this song would have been accepted by the public directly after the incident.

  4. I believe the pictures have a huge impact on the song. It gives the names of the real people who died in the Kent State University shooting. I believe the song had touched hearts of many American's after it was released. Some could've been insulted and hated how violent the lyrics can get, but in all truth, the song shiows exactly what had happened.

  5. This song gives a good understanding of what actually happened, but with the pictures it shows a lot more in depth of what really happened. To me personally the video helped me understand what happened and who got involved when these four were shot. Also the pictures used in this video really makes a person think. This is because if other people really got involved like they did after the shootings maybe we wouldn't be still in Iraq and other places today. The pictures really show a strong emotion and show what happened. When the song was released I think it helped with this whole mess. You can tell especially with the style of the music. It's actually a pretty catchy song!

  6. The pictures explain more of what was going on and helps us to understand what it was like when this was happening. The song explains the opinons of americans during this time that just wanted peace and to bring the troops home from over seas. -Katrina!

  7. All the pictures were very tragic. Most of the looks on the peoples faces show how scared they all were and shocked. The pictures help show the disaster at the college and help you view what was going on. They also show how terrified and crazy everyone was. When this song was released America must have been scared. Most people were probably afraid that shootings could happen around them especially if they were around protesters.

  10. I think the pictures give people a better idea of what happened at Kent State if they werent there when it happened. It shows the seriousness of it and how innocent people were killed. The song i think touched the Americans after this inncident happened and made it all set it to them on how bad it really was at that time.

  11. I think the pictures used in this video helped to reinforce the memory of the massacre that happened that day vividly. i believe they do help describe what happened at Kent State University on that time frame in our country's history. i believe when this song came out at the time it reinforced the protestors beliefs against the war and made more people realize that the war was bringing more bad than good to the country. -Robert Bernier

  13. The pictures in this video definitely show the horror of what happened that day. People were fighting for what they wanted and they got lit up for it. Four college students died because of it. The song also helps because it shows how they were against it too. Showing this to the public probably made a lot more people against the war.

  14. I totally agree that the pictures really help to show what happened. In the beginning when they show school pictures it evokes emotion because it makes people realize that its young innocent people we're talking about. It really shows exactly what was going on at the time and shows how the protesters felt.
I think the song is perfect because it's catchy and it fits perfectly to what happened. I think Americans would also be divided in their views on the song. Some may have accepted it because it's accurate but on the other hand i feel that some wouldn't like it because its too deeply accurate and it might have upset the public coming out so close after the war.
This video clip is very powerful and the lyrics, music, and pictures all evoke emotion in whoever watches it. For people who had family in this war this might be too painfully accurate to be able to watch, but personally it helped me understand what went on a little better.

  15. The pictures used in the video did a good job of connecting the viewer to the song and to that moment in history. If you were to just listen to the song, it may not mean much. Seeing the pictures, however, makes it more real and more accessible to people who weren't around during the time of the shooting. The pictures show the pain of the people involved, both physical and emotional.

I think this song may have made people feel more sympathetic to the victims and those close to them. It puts you in the shoes of someone who just saw his or her friends or family members get shot for standing up against something they believed was wrong. It makes people aware of what these protesters faced. I think the video was well put together and made its purpose very clear.

  16. besids the song being awsome i beleive that the use of pictures along with the lyrics in the song were very clever and gave an immage as to what happened that day at kent state. The fact that a song in general was written about the incident deffinately showed the people of that time that something needed to change.

  17. I beleive the pictures help show the actual pain that was brought to those kids. Also they go very well with the song and lyrics. This song and video is very in my eyes it probably touched each and every American who watched it. If I was alive back then I would have been out raged to see this and would want something done about it. Thats how every probably felt and they just wanted an end.

  18. In my eyes the picture brings out the pain in the kids and all the heartache they were going through during that time. It showed us (americans today) what it was like back then and how people were treated for something so stupid. It made me put myself in their shoes and look back to what i would've done if i was in that situation. The song went great with the video and really touched me to that moment in history. ---- Rose M

  19. To me, this video really showed what all those kids were going through. I mean I'd be that upset too if something that rediculous happened to my school. Truthfully, I really liked the song, and when you put the pictures with it, I think it makes it a lot better and easier to understand. The pictures kinda give you a clearer insight to what really happened that day. All in all, I really liked it.

  20. I feel that the movie shows what it was like to watch the war on tv. It shows how emotional and hectact the kent state killings was. I think the people who were there at the time of this happening were scaried for there life and afraid of getting shot also. The song was very emotional and showed how crazy the whole situation was.
